Training plan
A training plan is a formal, working document which describes what training and assessment you will do during your apprenticeship or traineeship.
The training plan specifies:
- how, when and where training will be delivered
- what assessment methods will be used.
You will have your own, separate training plan, which is developed collaboratively and signed by:
- you
- your employer
- your training organisation.
Schools can be involved in developing training plans for school-based apprentices and trainees, but don't sign the training plan. However, schools must be involved when negotiating the school, work and training timetable.
What's in the training plan
It includes:
- all units of competency needed to complete your qualification
- 'delivery mode' (e.g. workplace, classroom, online) for each unit
- dates for any training delivered by the training organisation
- recognition of prior learning, if applicable
- assessments (methods, outcomes, signatures to indicate competency)
- support services if you have special learning needs.

Employer resource assessments
As part of the training plan development, the training organisation will also conduct an employer resource assessment, to ensure that your employer can provide you with the range of work, facilities and supervision required to successfully complete your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- having your own copy of the training plan
- carrying out all learning and assessment as listed in the training plan
- working jointly with your employer and training organisation to achieve competency in all units.
Your employer's responsibilities
They are responsible for:
- having their own copy of the training plan
- providing any workplace tasks listed in the training plan
- working together with you and the training organisation to support your progress
- giving written and signed notice to us, if they don't think you will complete your training in time.
Your training organisation's responsibilities
They are responsible for, but not limited to:
- negotiating (and developing) the training plan with you and your employer
- having their own copy of the training plan
- advising you how all competency units can be completed (different ways they can be delivered and assessed)
- providing training and assessment (as listed in the training plan)
- notifying you and your employer of any issues that will affect the training plan.
Changing the training plan
The training plan is a flexible document and can be changed to suit you if your situation changes.
Lack of progress
If you are falling behind in your training, talk to your employer and training organisation.
When you talk to them, you can discuss the option of changing the 'delivery mode' of your training, which may better suit your learning style or circumstances.
